Qualifications and Regulations
The requirements to become a Certified Nursing Assistant in Ohio are like those in most other states. To work as a CNA, the individual must be enrolled in or have completed a state-approved nurse aide training program. It is possible to work in a long-term care facility or nursing home before completing classes, so long as the program is completed within four months of the first day of employment. CNA education must consist of at least 75 hours of instruction. 16 hours must be spent in the classroom before applicants are exposed to patients. The next 59 hours of cna course must be spent in a combination of classroom and clinical settings to provide supervised, practical experience in a setting similar to that of the candidate’s future employment. Once CNA training is complete, applicants must take the national competency exam. This test has two parts: one is a written portion testing functional, medical knowledge, and the other is a practical portion that tests the applicants’ ability to perform standard nurse aide duties, like taking blood pressure or feeding patients. The applicant will have two years or three attempts to pass both sections of the test after they complete their course, or else will be forced to retake their courses before testing again.
Wage and Cost
The average salary for a CNA working in Ohio is around $22,000, along a spread between $18,700 and $24,900. This is around the national average for all CNAs working in the U.S. but is much lower than Ohio’s neighboring states. The regions around the state are very distinct from each other, with Ohio as an intermediary. Stuck between two of the better places to receive a higher wage for CNAs, Ohio’s average compensation for the nurse aides does not compete with salaries in states to the west like Illinois or states to the east like Pennsylvania. The cost of training programs in Ohio falls between $550 for smaller courses, and up to $2000 for courses at community colleges or with private companies. There are no administrative fees for applying and registering on Ohio’s Nurse Aide Registry, though there will be charges for taking the test. Like most other states, Ohio allows its CNAs to apply for reimbursement for the cost of their certification training. This should cover the cost of tuition, course materials, testing fees, and any other miscellaneous application fees. In order to qualify, a CNA must be employed within twelve months of completing their CNA training.
